Manchester United stance on Europa League goalkeeper situation

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says David de Gea could be recalled for the latter stages of Manchester United's Europa League campaign.

Sergio Romero was recalled for the round-of-16 second leg win over LASK Linz in what was his eighth European appearance of the season and the Argentinian was entrusted with keeping goal for United's Europa League quarter and semi-finals, as well as the final, in 2017.

De Gea has endured a chastening season but kept his place for all 38 Premier League matches and Romero has been restricted to cup appearances again.

"He's played well tonight, definitely," Solskjaer said. "I'm not going to say Sergio is the Europa League keeper, it's between him and David all the time.

"We're going to pick a team that we think is gonna win this tournament, so you'll just have to wait and see."

United avoided a first home defeat since January 22 to come from behind and prevail 2-1 against LASK in a 7-1 aggregate thrashing. United will face Copenhagen in their quarter-final in Cologne, Germany on Monday.

Solskjaer made nine changes for the much delayed return match and was unsurprised by the underwhelming display. "It was as expected, really, against a team that we knew were aggressive and going to press us.

"We found it hard to find rhythm a little bit in the beginning in our passing, and we didn't create chances. But we needed game-time - some of these players - we needed to win the game and wanted to win the game, it's job done."
