Manchester United stance on Edinson Cavani amid Barcelona transfer deadline day speculation

Manchester United still expect Edinson Cavani to stay at the club amid speculation of interest from Barcelona.

Barcelona have been linked with a deadline day move for Cavani, 34, after United completed the re-signing of Cristiano Ronaldo.

The Manchester Evening News revealed on Monday Cavani was unhappy he was not included in the travelling squad to Southampton and he expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision by Premier League clubs not to allow internationals to play in red list countries. The Uruguayan football association confirmed the cancellation of Cavani's call-up on Monday morning.

Cavani has struggled to settle off the pitch in England and his father indicated in February he would leave United, only Cavani agreed to have his contract extended by a year in May.

Barcelona striker Sergio Aguero has been ruled out until October through injury and Cavani emerged as a possible late option. However, United remain keen to keep Cavani and believe he will still play a sufficient number of games this season.

Cavani could be assigned a new squad number as United attempt to secure permission for Ronaldo to regain the number seven.
