Manchester United stance on Edinson Cavani after Cristiano Ronaldo transfer

Manchester United have no plans to sell Edinson Cavani despite agreeing a sensational deal to bring Cristiano Ronaldo back to Old Trafford.

Cavani signed a one-year contract extension towards the end of last season and the 34-year-old was expected to lead the line this year, but the signing of Ronaldo will put his place in jeopardy.

The Uruguayan has yet to appear for United this season after an extended break in South America in pre-season, although having returned to Carrington recently he could be in the squad to face Wolves on Sunday.

But long-term he looks set to see his place taken by Ronaldo, with United agreeing a fee of €15million and a potential €8million in add-ons to sign the 36-year-old from Juventus.

Ronaldo is set to undergo a medical in Lisbon before signing his contract to bring about a remarkable return to the club he left for Real Madrid in 2009.

He comes back as a striker, rather than the dazzling winger he was during his first spell at Old Trafford, and that's likely to mean less game time for Cavani.

The former Paris St-Germain striker was close to leaving the club after a season, tempted by a return to South America after struggling to acclimatise during his first campaign in Manchester, most of which was spent in lockdown.

But after a blistering end to the season that saw him score 10 goals in his final 11 games, he was convinced to remain at the club for a further season, with the attraction of playing in front of a full Old Trafford key to that decision.

Cavani has become a cult hero since signing on a free transfer last October and although he may now find himself below Ronaldo in the pecking order of United strikers, the club have no plans to let him leave before Tuesday's transfer deadline.
