Manchester United squad update after Covid outbreak ahead of Newcastle United clash

Manchester United's squad have begun a 'staggered' return to training ahead of their festive clash with Newcastle United.

The Red Devils' Carrington training base had been closed to first-team players after fixtures with Brentford and Brighton were postponed following a Covid-19 outbreak.

The Premier League have stressed their intentions to proceed as planned with the festive schedule, despite only four top-flight fixtures taking place last weekend.

A host of Manchester United players were pictured returning to training on Tuesday as the club began a phased approach to typical day-to-day activities at Carrington.

The Manchester Evening News reports Marcus Rashford, Harry Maguire, Raphael Varane, Scott McTominay, Fred, Mason Greenwood, Luke Shaw, Jesse Lingard, and Juan Mata were among the players pictured to return.

Cristiano Ronaldo, Donny van de Beek, Paul Pogba, and Jadon Sancho were among those not accounted for.

The Magpies are due to host Ralf Rangnick's on December 27 on the back of three straight defeats against Leicester City, Liverpool and Manchester City.
