Manchester United shocked Sheffield United with squad for midweek friendly fixture

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder admits he was shocked by the quality Manchester United showcased in their behind-closed-doors match this week.

United defeated the Premier League new boys 3-1 in a friendly fixture on Tuesday, with goals from Andreas Pereira, Mason Greenwood and Angel Gomes.

Alexis Sanchez, Juan Mata and Chris Smalling also started the win for United as part of a training squad which had cost the club £130.8million in transfer fees.

Wilder admits he was shocked to face such a strong XI at the Carrington training ground earlier this week, but has thanked United for giving them such a good game.

Former United prodigy Ravel Morrison starred for Sheffield United in the friendly game, and Wilder has confirmed he is now in contention to make his Premier League debut for the club.

"He's ready. Yeah, he's ready," Wilder told a pre-match press conference. "He's been involved in both squads, so he is ready. We played a behind-closed-doors games at Manchester United in the week and he played 90 minutes in that, it was a great exercise for us.

"Against about £200m of talent! So when we were talking about playing a behind-closed-doors game against Manchester United and all of a sudden the likes of, well maybe I'll just keep that under wraps. Some unbelievably talented footballers came walking over towards our boys, maybe there was a bit of a 'Wow! This is a proper game'.

"But it was a good exercise for our boys against world-class players and we certainly appreciate the opportunity of going over to Manchester United and them putting the game on for us."
