Manchester United shirt numbers available to Matheus Cunha and other potential signings

There is a little over two weeks to go in the summer transfer window and time is running out for Manchester United to finalise their transfer business.

Following Saturday's 4-0 hammering at the hands of Brentford, United and manager Erik ten Hag are desperate to add new additions to the squad. The Reds are bottom of the Premier League table and are in need of fresh blood to try and spark their season into life.

It is in midfield, out wide and up front where United are believed to be focusing all of their energy, with all three positions in desperate need of improvement and competition for places. The Reds are continuing to work on a deal to bring Juventus ace Adrien Rabiot to Old Trafford, while rumours linking other players with moves to M16 continue to rumble on.

The latest name to be linked with a move to Old Trafford is Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha. According to various reports, United have held talks with his agent, but no deal is close to being agreed as things stand.

With the prospect of United adding Cunha and other new signings to the squad before the window closes, it could be a busy period for the kit man, tasked with printing new names and numbers on the back of shirts. But what numbers remain available to any prospective Old Trafford arrivals this summer?

No.13

Vacated by goalkeeper Lee Grant at the end of last term, the No.13 shirt is up for grabs for the first time since 2018 for a new recruit. Prior to Grant adopting it four years ago, it was donned by Anders Lindegaard.

United are still understood to be considering a move for a new back-up goalkeeper and that could be what sees the No.13 shirt snapped, given its popularity with shot-stoppers. Former attacker Ji-sung Park figure is among the most famous to have ever worn it.

No.15

Following Andreas Pereira's move to Fulham earlier this summer, the No.15 shirt is available for a new signing to lay their hands on it. The Brazilian had worn it since 2018, picking up the baton from Adnan Januzaj.

It is a shirt that has been worn by several former United stars in the past, including Nemanja Vidic and David Beckham.

No.18

Following Juan Mata's departure at the end of last season, it was quickly established that Bruno Fernandes would snap up his vacated No.8 shirt, leaving No.18 available. None of United's three new recruits have snapped it up, meaning it remains up for grabs.

While Fernandes is among the most famous to have won it in recent years, Ashley Young and Paul Scholes are also former holders of it.

No.21

Another shirt number that has been vacated following an exit at the end of last season. Uruguay international Edinson Cavani wore the No.21 shirt last season after giving up the iconic No.7 shirt for Cristiano Ronaldo.

It has been a popular number with attackers down the years, with Daniel James, Diego Forlan and Cavani all sporting it. Ander Herrera and Rafael have also worn it during this century.

No.24

The No.24 shirt has been up for grabs since former centre-back Timothy Fosu-Mensah left Old Trafford in January last year. Prior to that, it was occupied by former midfielder Darren Fletcher for more than a decade.

No.31

The No.31 shirt also remains available for any new recruits, with Nemanja Matic vacating it at the time of his departure at the end of last season. He wore it throughout his time at Old Trafford, meaning the wearer prior to him was Bastian Schweinsteiger.

*Other shirt numbers above 31 remain available.
