Manchester United set to release Regan Poole after Newport play-off final

Manchester United defender Regan Poole is set to be released from the club in the coming weeks.

Poole will be named, alongside the likes of James Wilson, among the released players with United deciding against the option of triggering a one-year extension on his contract.

Wilson and Poole are expected to head up a list of up to 10 young players due to leave in the summer, though the exact number remains to be seen.

Poole made a one-minute cameo in the Europa League win over Midtylland in 2016 which also witnessed the dramatic emergence of Marcus Rashford. That looks set to be his one and only first team contribution to United.

Poole is currently preparing to compete in the League Two play-off final tomorrow (Saturday) when his Newport County side take on Tranmere at Wembley. The 20-year-old midway through the 2018/19 campaign and has played 25 times to help the Exiles to the brink of an unlikely promotion.

When asked about his future last week, he admitted he wasn't sure what his future held. “My contract is up at the end of the season, but the club has got an option to extend (for another year)," he said.

“If they take it up, they take it up. If not, I’m not too sure what my plan is. We’ll see what happens.

"It could be a big summer, but I’m happy with how my loan has gone and hopefully (United will want to keep me).”
