Manchester United set to play friendly before Premier League season starts

Manchester United are due to play Aston Villa in a pre-season friendly that is set to be their only game before the Premier League season starts.

The MEN understands United are scheduled to travel to Villa this weekend but have no plans to play any more matches ahead of their season opener against Crystal Palace on September 19.

United, Wolves and Manchester City were allowed to start the domestic campaign a week later than the other 17 Premier League clubs as they had competed in the latter stages of the Europa League and Champions League in August.

Even though United were eliminated at the semi-final stage there will only be a 34-day gap between their defeat to Sevilla and the visit of Palace at Old Trafford.

This month's Nations League fixtures have also deprived United of several players as Dean Henderson, Bruno Fernandes, Anthony Martial and Victor Lindelof were still on international duty on Tuesday night. Lindelof sat out Sweden's defeat to Portugal because of fatigue.

New signing Donny van de Beek is yet to arrive at United's Carrington training complex after appearing for the Netherlands in their games against Poland and Italy. David de Gea, Scott McTominay and Daniel James were also away with their nations.

Paul Pogba tested positive for COVID-19 last month, Marcus Rashford withdrew from the England squad through injury and captain Harry Maguire only returned to Carrington on Monday after he was granted additional time off. Mason Greenwood flew home on Monday after he transgressed on England duty.

A number of non-internationals have still not reported at Carrington as they are believed to be in quarantine after heading abroad during the truncated close season.

United won 3-0 at Villa in July through goals from Fernandes, Greenwood and Pogba.
