Manchester United set to make key change to squad that could give Arsenal huge encouragement

Manchester United caretaker boss Michael Carrick has confirmed that the Red Devils will once again be able to call upon the services of Harry Maguire for Thursday’s clash with Arsenal.

Despite Ralf Rangnick having been announced as the club’s new manager until the end of the 2021/22 season, work permit issues mean that Carrick remains in charge for the time being.

It has been confirmed that the former midfielder will name the team for this week’s clash with Arsenal and he has been handed a huge boost ahead of the game, with the return of Red Devils’ skipper Maguire.

The former Leicester City defender missed out on the trip to Stamford Bridge at the weekend having been awarded a red card in the 4-1 mauling at the hands of Watford - a result that saw Ole Gunnar Solskjaer lose his job at Old Trafford.

Having served his suspension, though, the England man has been confirmed to be back in the squad ahead of Thursday’s tussle and could be a key change for Carrick to come back in.

Talking in his press conference, Carrick said: “There are always niggles at this time of year, playing a lot of games. There are always players you’re waiting on a little bit, to an extent.

“Obviously, Harry is coming back into the squad after his suspension but we’ll see who is fit and available for tomorrow [Thursday].”

Maguire has so far come in for a considerable amount of criticism for his performances on the club front throughout the campaign.

Much like the rest of his teammates at United, he has struggled for consistency - a huge reason why the Red Devils currently find themselves in eighth in the Premier League table and five points behind the Gunners ahead of kick-off.

Despite Maguire’s return, the 28-year-old does not come into the game with the best record when facing the Gunners and could offer them some encouragement.

In 13 career appearances against Arsenal, he has won on just two occasions, the last coming in a 3-0 success for former club Leicester City at the back end of the 2018/19 campaign.

He is yet to be victorious against the Gunners since signing for Manchester United over two-and-a-half years ago.
