Manchester United set to announce Under-23s managerial appointment

Manchester United are set to appoint a new management duo to their Under-23s side, with more former players returning to the club.

United have been hunting for new coaching staff for their age-group side since Ricky Sbragia left the club in May, following another disappointing season of results for the Under-23s.

Neil Wood will now take over as head coach, with Quinton Fortune being named as his assistant, it is understood.

Wood, 36, knows United's academy well having come through the ranks at the club, but he left for Coventry City in 2004 without making a first team appearance. He returned to Old Trafford in 2014 as an academy coach but is now set to be handed the task of taking charge of the Under-23s in Premier League 2 Division Two next season.

He will be assisted by Fortune, who had a more illustrious career at Old Trafford as a player. The South African spent seven years at the club, making more than 120 appearances, and he was a teammate of Solskjaer's at United.

Fortune, 42, returned to the club in 2012 to train with their reserves while working on his coaching badges, and he was assistant coach to Cardiff City's Under-21 side while Solskjaer was in charge of the Bluebirds.

Nemanja Vidic had been linked with the Under-23s job over the weekend, but it will be two other former United players who take the reins, continuing plans to introduce ex-players into roles at the club.

Solskjaer is assisted by Mike Phelan and Michael Carrick, while Darren Fletcher and Rio Ferdinand have both been linked with the technical director post and have held discussions about club strategy with Ed Woodward.
