Manchester United set for share of £1.5bn boost from new Premier League TV deal

Manchester United are set to benefit from the Premier League's new TV deal.

The Times report that the Premier League is set to extend its present TV deals with Sky, BT Sport, Amazon and the BBC, which is currently worth £1.5bn a year.

It is a deal that represents a coup for the Premier League, with rights having previously been expected to drop in value due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The deal removes the risk of the rights falling in value at an auction and means the likes of United - among Premier League clubs broadcast most frequently - will not see any drop in TV money.

It is expected to be a two or three-year agreement, set to come into force from August 2022.

Some had suggested the value of broadcast rights would fall due to the pandemic, with both Sky and BT being financially affected, particularly with the lack of live sport to show during the initial lockdown period.

Yet, amid fears that they may be blown out of the water by a big-budget streaming platform, the two broadcasters have agreed an extension at the current terms rather than risk trying to force a cheaper price at an auction.

The agreement means Sky will have the rights to 128 matches, with BT showing 52 games and Amazon airing 20, whilst the BBC will continue to show highlights.

It will represent a boost for CEO Richard Masters, whose position has already been strengthened following the Big Six's European Super League catastrophe.

The Premier League has already renewed its £367m Middle East deal with beIN Sports and, before the pandemic, negotiated a £2bn six-year deal with the Nent platform for Scandinavian rights.
