Manchester United sent transfer message by Benfica boss

Benfica manager Jorge Jesus has responded to Manchester United midfielder Nemanja Matic's statement that he'd like to join the club in the future.

Matic recently indicated that he would love to play for the Portuguese club again before he hangs up his boots.

The 32-year-old insists he remains committed to United for now but has not ruled out a return to Benfica at some point.

The Serbia international has more than two years remaining on his current contract at Old Trafford.

Matic joined United in 2017 following a second spell at Premier League rivals Chelsea.

In between his two stints at Stamford Bridge, he spent three years at Benfica - and clearly has fond memories of his time in Lisbon.

"I still don't think about finishing my career. Let's see," Matic told Sport TV.

"For me, Benfica was always in the heart. Let's see what the future will bring.

"If Benfica ever thinks it needs me again, let's think about it, but now I'm very happy at Man United, I don't think about leaving, but in football you never know.

"If one day I return to Portugal, the only team I wanted to play for in Portugal was Benfica."

Matic added: "I was very happy there. Benfica is one of the best clubs in the world. I was very happy there in the team, with the fans and with everyone in the club.

"Whenever I have time, I like to go through Lisbon. My family also likes it a lot and misses everyone from Lisbon."

Benfica boss Jesus was asked about Matic at his latest press conference.

"Everyone knows he had excellent seasons at Benfica," A Bola quote him as saying.

"There are few players in the world at 1.90 metres with the technical capacity he has.

"That's why Chelsea signed him and is now at Man United - and continues to play.

"I have now seen the game with Milan (in the Europa League). (He is) still in excellent athletic conditions and with technical quality."

Jesus, though, admitted it would be tricky to do a deal to get Matic back to Benfica.

"It is very difficult to happen," he added. "Portuguese clubs do not have the capacity to hire players who represent the great teams in Europe."
