Chris Smalling was rushed to hospital while on holiday in Bali after fainting because of food poisoning – but the Manchester United central defender has recovered.

Smalling is on vacation on the Indonesian island after playing in England’s disappointing Euro 2016 campaign, which was ended by Iceland knocking out Roy Hodgson’s side at the last-16 stage.

Smalling was taken to hospital on Sunday but has been given the all-clear and has resumed his holiday.

A club statement read: “Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday, which resulted in him fainting on Sunday. The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine.

“Smalling is currently on vacation following his time with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training later this month.”

Smalling’s management company, Wasserman Media Group, also moved to dismiss reports that the incident was anything more serious: “Following pictures that have been circulating online this morning and contrary to unfounded media speculation we can confirm that Chris was taken to hospital after fainting due to a severe case of food poisoning while on holiday in Bali. Chris would like to thank everyone for their well wishes and is now feeling fine.”

Following a major tournament players must have a minimum three-week break after the end of their participation. As England were eliminated on 27 June Smalling can return on 19 July, in time for United’s tour of China under their new manager, José Mourinho.

Mourinho, who was appointed in May following the sacking of Louis van Gaal, arrived at the club’s Carrington training ground on Monday for his first official day in the post.
