Manchester United's transfer decision on Ousmane Dembele has been proved right

Manchester United have committed a catalogue of errors in the transfer market since Sir Alex Ferguson's departure.

With the benefit of hindsight, their decision to refrain from signing Barcelona's Ousmane Dembele last summer is certainly not of them, though, and as the winger unfortunately sustained yet another injury last week, their shrewd approach was vindicated.

Dembele quickly built a reputation as one of the world's most exciting young prospects when emerging at Borussia Dortmund's elite school of development, but his graduation to Barcelona has since not gone as planned - he's been plagued with injuries.

His time at the Spanish giants has been overshadowed by constant spells on the sidelines and his poor luck with injuries has ensured he's yet to deliver on his promise, with a reoccurring hamstring complaint, particularly, causing havoc for the Frenchman.

Last September, United became increasingly frustrated and worried as their talks with Borussia Dortmund to sign long-term target Jadon Sancho began to collapse and then reports emerged linking Dembele with a move to Old Trafford.

The MEN revealed United had no intention of buying Dembele from Barcelona and it was understood Ole Gunnar Solskjaer only considered him as an emergency loan option, something that has since proved to be an inspired decision.

Did United make the right call on Dembele? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

While Dembele was included in Didier Deschamps' France side for this summer's European Championship, it was announced on Monday afternoon that he had been withdrawn from the squad and ruled out of the tournament following a knee injury.

Dembele suffered the injury in the second half of France's 1-1 draw with Hungary on Saturday and he was subsequently forced off, meaning he made just a 30-minute cameo for Les Bleus, in which he looked sharp and hit the post for his nation.

The date of Dembele's return is yet to be determined, but his rotten luck with injuries unfortunately continues.

Sometimes doing nothing in the transfer market is better than making late, rash decisions and United's chiefs deserve praise for making the right call on Dembele and their stance perhaps shows that they have learnt from their previous mistakes.
