Manchester United's third goal vs Everton could've stood due to loophole in rule book

Marcus Rashford was as aggrieved as Manchester United fans were when his goal against Everton was chalked off for handball.

The striker rode through challenges from James Tarkowski and Jordan Pickford before slotting home late on. However, he was adjudged to have handled the ball in the lead up and VAR cancelled out what would have been his sixth strike of the season.

Goals from Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo had overturned Alex Iwobi’s opener and Rashford’s attempt would have made for a welcome cushion going into the final minutes of the game.

The goal, in fact, would have stood if Rashford had passed to Bruno Fernandes who was a square-ball away, ready for a tap-in. The official laws of the game outline that should a player score “immediately after the ball has touched the hand/arm, even if accidental”, the goal should not stand.

But this rule does not apply if a teammate scores after the alleged handball from the subject player. Of course, there can be no blame attributed to Rashford, whose primary concern would've been to find the back of the net himself to try and extend United's lead.

Rashford took to Twitter after the game to share his frustration with the VAR decision. He said: "+3 points on the road @ManUtd. VAR was questionable but thankfully it didn't impact the result." United are now fifth in the table, just a point off Chelsea in fourth.

Rashford started a third straight game since coming back from injury at Goodison Park. After his double against Omonia in Thursday’s 3-2 Europa League win, he was started on the left while Jadon Sancho was dropped for the first time in the league this season.
