Manchester United's strongest line-up after transfer deadline day

Manchester United made Cristiano Ronaldo's sensational homecoming official on transfer deadline day.

Ronaldo, 36, signed a two-year contract at United, another year is optional, and the five-time Ballon d'Or winner has now joined the Reds' other summer signings Tom Heaton, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane at Carrington to report for first-team training.

Although United failed to address their need for a new defensive midfielder in the transfer market, Ronaldo's return to United has increased the pressure on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to deliver the first piece of silverware of his managerial reign at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo's presence is expected to drive up standards to yet another level although, while he'll contribute greatly on the pitch and the transfer made commercial sense, his return could mean some of United's first-team stars will move down the pecking order.

So, what is Solskjaer's strongest XI when everyone is fit after deadline day? Here's what our MEN writers think...

Samuel Luckhurst

To paraphrase Harold Wilson, a month is a lifetime in football. David de Gea has to be considered United's first-choice goalkeeper again after an impressive August, his performances and mindset doubtless helped by the absence of the unwell Dean Henderson. The goalkeeper situation resolved itself without any tactful management.

The back four picks itself, although Aaron Wan-Bissaka is in by default. He needs to start playing like a proper United player. Scott McTominay has to be used in a defensive capacity in the absence of an athletic specialist and operates deep for Scotland.

Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Paul Pogba are untouchables and so is Mason Greenwood. Jadon Sancho has underwhelmed so far but the investment and potential demands his inclusion.

Domestic bench: Henderson, Dalot, Lindelof, Matic, Van de Beek, Mata, Martial, Rashford, Cavani

United's back-line picks itself, especially as it seems that David de Gea has beaten Dean Henderson to the No.1 shirt but it's as we move forward in the team where things get interesting.

With so many exciting options in the attacking areas it's hard to pick one starting XI that will definitively be the best, and the temptation will be to throw as many attackers in as possible.

However, Paul Pogba has proven over the last season that his strongest position is on the left-wing and that when in a midfield two United are often left exposed at the back.

So while it may seem outlandish, United's best starting XI probably still has a midfield duo of Fred and Scott McTominay behind the attacking players to provide that much-needed solidity.

In attack, it would be Pogba on the left with probably Jadon Sancho on the right, though Mason Greenwood's form is pushing him hard for a spot.

Then, of course, it would be Bruno Fernandes in attacking midfield supporting Cristiano Ronaldo as the main striker.

It seemed unlikely De Gea would remain as United's number one this term, but momentum has now shifted behind the Spaniard.

United's back four of Wan-Bissaka, Varane, Maguire and Shaw is the strongest they've had since Sir Alex Ferguson retired and that outstanding back line should ensure the Reds are in contention for major honours come the latter stages of the season.

While Solskjaer has persisted with the 4-2-3-1, it seems wise to change to 4-3-3 considering United's personnel. That means McTominay can play as the anchor in the three, with Pogba and Fernandes further forward to place an emphasis on attack.

How do you justify dropping Greenwood after his start to the season? Well, It's a difficult call to make, but it can't be forgotten what a healthy Rashford can produce for United on the left side. Sancho can play on the right and, of course, Ronaldo should lead the line.

If Sancho's form doesn't improve, though, it's a no brainer to get Greenwood back into the starting XI.
