Manchester United's pre-season plan for James Garner as Nottingham Forest eye return

Attention is turning to the transfer window for Nottingham Forest as Chris Hughton looks to continue to shape his squad in the coming months.

The Reds are set to be busy when the window opens as Hughton aims to ‘tighten’ his squad ahead of the 2021/22 campaign.

Forest will be hoping for a more successful season after a 17th place finish in the table at the end of the current campaign.

One ray of light in a largely unforgettable season was the loan signing of Manchester United midfielder James Garner.

The 20-year-old spent the first half of the campaign on loan at Watford, but was recalled in January and sent to the City Ground.

Garner hit the ground running in a Forest shirt appearing in every single game since completing his move and scoring four goals in his 20 appearances for the club.

That has led to Forest hoping to bring the youngster back to the City Ground on another temporary basis in the summer.

However, according to the Manchester Evening News, the Reds may have to wait for a definite answer from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.

It is reported that United are keen to see Garner, along with fellow loanee Teden Mengi, take part in pre-season training with the first team squad ahead of a decision being made.

The report says that Solskjaer is considering adding both players to his first-team squad next season, although that is dependent on the reinforcements they can bring in during the summer window.

It is also claimed that United could look to send the players on loan to fellow Premier League sides as they take the next step in their development.

Following the summer, Garner will have just one year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford with his deal expiring in the summer of 2022.
