Manchester United's nightmare scenario for Tottenham fixture after Europa League draw

Manchester United are one of a number of clubs chasing the Champions League places at the end of the season, as teams look to take advantage at the two-year ban hanging over Manchester City.

The ban, issued by UEFA, is subject to appeal, but, should it stand, it means that a fifth place finish would mean qualification for the Champions League for the 2020/21 season.

Tottenham, Chelsea and Arsenal will all be hoping to secure their places in the top five at the end of the season in order to compete in the tournament.

With the top three - Liverpool, Manchester City and Leicester City, looking quite secure in their positions it is likely that up to six or even eight teams could be fighting for the final two places.

Jose Mourinho: I have no complaints about my players

Chelsea currently sit in fourth, with Manchester United in fifth three points adrift and Tottenham and Sheffield United in sixth and seventh just one point behind.

In March Spurs host Manchester United in what could prove to be a crucial game come the end of the season, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's team's progression into the Europa League last 16 has caused what looks to be a difficult run of fixtures.

Ahead of their trip to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Man United take on Manchester rivals Man City at Old Trafford before travelling to Austria to take on LASK in the first leg of their Europa League tie just four days later.

The trip to Spurs comes just three days after that first leg before the Red Devils host the second leg just days later.

The next weekend will also see Solskjaer's men host Sheffield United, who themselves will be aiming for a shock fifth place finish.

Tottenham on the other hand will have a further two-days rest than their rivals as they take on RB Leipzig in the second leg of their Champions League round on 16 tie on the Tuesday - allowing them a five day rest in between the two fixtures.
