Manchester United's Marcus Rashford urges people to join him on Unicef's Water Walk

Manchester United 's Marcus Rashford is using his platform to urge the nation to sign up to Unicef's Water Walk.

The 21-year-old said it's 'mind blowing' that young children in some parts of the world 'have to choose between going to school' or 'providing clean water for their families.'

The England forward is asking people to raise funds to make a difference to the more than 2 billion people that don’t have access to clean and safe drinking water.

Unicef's Water Walk challenges people to walk five miles everyday for one week in September, which mirrors the over 260 million people worldwide who walk for over 30 minutes a day to access clean water.

Marcus, who on average covers five miles on a football pitch in 75 minutes, said:  "It blows my mind that in this day and age millions of people across the world have to walk for miles just to access clean water.

"We take for granted that we can go to the kitchen and have a clean glass of water whenever we like, sadly there are many people that don’t have that option.

"I wanted to use my platform to bring attention to this so I’m asking that people sign up to Unicef UK’s Water Walk to help raise as much money as possible so young children don’t have to choose between going to school or playing with their friends, and providing clean water for their families."

The charity aims to ensure that by 2030, no child has to walk more than a 30 minute round trip for water, and with the money raised, Unicef can install water pumps and pipes to ensure children have access to safe, clean drinking water.

You can sign up to Unicef UK’s Water Walk by picking one week in September, where you then plan your five mile route - which could be your walk to work, picking the kids up from school or a trip to the shops - and then get fundraising.

Unicef has already installed sanitation and water facilities in more more than 170,000 schools since 2007.
