Manchester United's Luke Shaw sends message to Wayne Rooney following Derby County win

Manchester United defender Luke Shaw has insisted that club legend Wayne Rooney is still a brilliant player following Thursday's 3-0 victory over his Derby County side.

United advanced to the quarter-finals of the FA Cup with the professional victory at Pride Park and Shaw was the unlikely source of the opening goal as his bouncing strike looped into the goal for only his second ever goal for the club.

Odion Ighalo would then score a goal in each half to round off the win and the 5,000 strong United fan contingent were singing for Rooney.

The supporters were chanting Rooney's name for the entire 90 minutes and sounded gutted when only a fantastic Sergio Romero save denied the former United captain from scoring a brilliant free-kick in the final minute of the game.

Following his substitution, Shaw got the chance to sit back and watch Rooney in action and was blown away by how good he still is.

"Everyone knows Wazza is a massive legend at United," Shaw told MUTV after the game.

"When I came off sat on the bench still watching him, he's still got it and he's still an amazing player and he was a very big threat today.

"It's nice to see him again and see him doing really well as well so we all wish him the best for the rest of the season."

United will now face Norwich City for the right to go to Wembley to compete in the semi-finals and Shaw revealed that the team are full of confidence going into the tie.

"Very happy with the tie," he added. "I was watching it last night but it doesn't matter home or away we're feeling really confident at the moment and we're going stride by stride.

"So we need to keep going, keep the confidence up and keep getting the victories."
