Luke Shaw did not want Scott McTominay to shoot and was hoping he would run the ball into the corner before Manchester United‘s second derby goal on Sunday.
McTominay clinched a deserved 2-0 win for United at Old Trafford by capitalising on an error by Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson, whose wayward throw was intercepted.
With Ederson out of position, and from around 40 yards out, McTominay tried a first-time shot and the City goalkeeper could not rush back in time to prevent him from scoring.
Shaw was watching on and wondering why McTominay had not kept possession so that United could protect their one-goal lead.
“To be fair, in my head I was like: ‘Why is he shooting? Run it in the corner!’”, Shaw revealed. ”I think it topped off such an amazing game and a result I think we deserved.
“You know, like I said, we can’t stop here, we can’t be happy with just this. We need to keep going and push on.”
McTominay’s goal sparked wild scenes of celebration around Old Trafford as United secured their first league double over their neighbours since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.
“The last few years they’ve had very disappointing results against Man City at home. Away we’ve been good but at home we’ve struggled,” Shaw said.
“The fans were amazing today and it helps us even more when they’re like that. You just smile when you come off the pitch, the way they’re singing makes us all very happy.
“We’re glad that we can get them singing like that today with an amazing result like this.”
