Manchester United's leaders questioned as Solskjaer told to be ruthless with players

Former Manchester United striker Dwight Yorke has urged Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to rile up his players after their 6-1 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

United were heavily beaten on an embarrassing afternoon at Old Trafford which has seen them come under heavy criticism.

It leaves Solskjaer's side with one win from their opening three Premier League games but the manner of all three performances are cause for concern.

The United boss admitted after the game the heavy humbling was “the worst day I’ve had as Manchester United manager," with a raft of social media apologies forthcoming from players in the aftermath.

After a poor start to the season, Solskjaer’s treble-winning teammate Yorke has called on the United boss to take deliver some home truths in the dressing room bemoaning a lack of leaders within the team.

“The manager has to believe he can inject that energy. It looked a bit lacklustre,” Yorke told talkSPORT.

“We need some leaders. We need winners on the football pitch.

“Until we get that on a consistent basis, we seem to take one step forwards and two steps back at the moment. We need to find a way to be consistent.

“I’m not sure he’s going to get them by the scruff of the neck. He’s not a Roy Keane by any means.

"He has a different style of management but I expect him at least to be having some stern words.

“He [Solskjaer] has to address the players in no uncertain ways and get people to be pulling their weight in the team. I’m sure there will be some harsh words said.

“We haven’t seen this side of Ole but I’m sure he’s got that ruthlessness inside him as well.”
