Manchester United's Jurgen Klopp plan scuppered and Liverpool reaped the rewards

Liverpool great Phil Thompson has revealed the reason why Jurgen Klopp turned down the opportunity to manage Manchester United back in 2013.

At the time, the German was in charge of a Borussia Dortmund side who he had just guided to back-to-back Bundesliga titles.

The German was hot property and had quickly established himself as one of the most sought-after coaches in world football.

And in an interview after Liverpool's Premier League title success on Thursday, Thompson opened up on how United tried to bring in Klopp to oversee their new era after Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement.

Before the now Sky Sports pundit went on to claim the reason why Klopp opted against a move to Old Trafford was because his wife, Ulla, told him it wasn’t right.

"I interviewed Klopp for Sky, and I asked if he and Liverpool were created for each other," Thompson told TV2 in Norway. “He looked at me and asked 'Why?'.

"Then Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United, but his wife said it wasn't right.

"When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right. There is something strange there. It is as if he's created for Liverpool."

Liverpool’s 30-year wait for a league title was finally ended on Thursday night as Manchester City were beaten 2-1 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

And speaking on Friday, Klopp revealed he made an emotional phone call to his family as his side were seconds away from winning the Premier League title.

“I called my family 10 seconds before the final whistle,” the Reds boss said. “We had a FaceTime call.

“I told them I loved them, they told me they loved me. We cannot be together, that was not nice, but that’s how it is.

“Then I put the phone on the table and said ‘leave it on, because in four or five seconds something special will happen’. That was a really nice moment, which I enjoyed a lot.

“All the other messages, I don’t want to compare at the moment. They were great, all full of appreciation, respect, love, support, whatever.

“Maybe I should use this opportunity to say sorry I cannot answer all of them, but I can read all of them. That’s what I will do in the next few days.”
