Manchester United's heaviest Premier League defeats and where 4-0 Everton hammering ranks

Manchester United slumped to their sixth defeats in eight games after a 4-0 hammering to Everton which leaves Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and the club's supporters searching for answers.

Goals from Richarlison, Gylfi Sigurdsson, Lucas Digne and Theo Walcott consigned the Reds to their heaviest Premier League loss in two-and-a-half years.

United had been soundly beaten 2-0 by Everton on Easter Sunday in 2014 in David Moyes' final game in charge, but this was an even worse defeat that leaves Solskjaer's side off the pace in the race for the top four.

Not since losing 4-0 to Chelsea in October 2016 — Jose Mourinho's return to Stamford Bridge — had United lost by such a margin in the league. Before that, a second string United had been beaten 4-0 in the League Cup by a Dele Alli inspired MK Dons.

You have to go back to October 2011 and that horrendous 6-1 home defeat to Man City for a heavier Premier League defeat for United. Sir Alex Ferguson's side were beaten by a five-goal margin three times in the Premier League — the other losses 5-0 scorelines to Chelsea (1999) and Newcastle United (1996).

Before the Premier League era, United's heaviest is a 7-0 defeat (on three occasions, to Blackburn, Aston Villa and Wolves).

The unwanted records keep tumbling for Solskjaer, with United going 11 matches without a clean sheet for the first time since 1998 and conceding 46 or more goals for the first time ever in a Premier League season.

Their midweek 3-0 defeat to Barcelona had also provided United with their worst ever Champions League aggregate loss (4-0).

United's heaviest Premier League defeats

  • 5-0 to Newcastle (1996)
  • 5-0 to Chelsea (1999)
  • 4-0 to Chelsea (2016)
