Manchester United's head of academy Nicky Butt arrested after alleged domestic incident

Manchester United have been rocked ahead of their Champions League quarter-final second leg by the news that their head of academy, Nicky Butt, has been arrested after an alleged domestic incident.

The Daily Mail have reported that Butt, 44, was held by police on Tuesday afternoon just hours ahead of United’s match in Spain.

Butt remained in police custody early this evening.

The Independent has contacted Manchester United for comment. Greater Manchester Police declined to comment on the story.

The news comes after fellow Class of ’92 member Paul Scholes was charged by the Football Association for allegedly breaking their rules on betting.

It is alleged that the former Manchester United midfielder, now a co-owner of Salford City, placed 140 bets on matches between August 2015 and January 2019.

If proven, the bets would contravene FA Rule E8, which relates to misconduct. Players, managers, match officials and club staff are all prohibited from betting on football anywhere in the world if employed by a Premier League, English Football League, National League, Women's Super League, as well as those in the Northern, Southern and Isthmian leagues.

He has until 26 April 2019 to respond to the FA charge.
