Manchester United's Fred issues support for Ukraine-based Brazilians after Russia invasion

Manchester United midfielder Fred has issued support for Ukraine-based Brazilian footballers after Russia invaded the country in the early hours of Thursday.

Explosions have been heard in the Ukrainian capital of Kyiv and other major cities following Vladimir Putin’s announcement that a "military operation" had begun.

The Russian president announced the action during a televised address early on Thursday morning, saying the move was a response to threats from Ukraine.

On Twitter, Fred - who played for Ukrainian outfit Shakhtar Donetsk before joining United - retweeted a video plea from Brazilian footballers who ply their trade in the country asking for the Brazilian government to help bring them home.

The 28-year-old United player added: "Very sad moment that our friends from Ukraine are going through.

"My prayers are all for you.

"I very much hope that this situation will be resolved as soon as possible and that peace will be reestablished.

"God bless you all."
