Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo sends messages to Michael Carrick and Ralf Rangnick

Cristiano Ronaldo has thanked Michael Carrick after it was announced that he would leave Manchester United on Thursday.

Carrick was part of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's coaching staff and he took caretaker charge of the club following his dismissal last month.

The former midfielder stopped the rot at United and lifted spirits among key personnel. Carrick leaves United after 15 years at the club and he exits with an undefeated record as caretaker boss, having secured points from games against Villarreal, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Ronaldo scored two goals in United's 3-2 win over Arsenal on Thursday night, which was Carrick's last match, and the forward took to social media on Friday to thank his former teammate while he also looked ahead to life under Ralf Rangnick.

"Michael Carrick was a class act as a player and he can become a great coach as well," Ronaldo wrote.

"Nothing is impossible for this guy. Personally, I’m proud to have played with him by my side as well as with him as a manager on our bench. But now it’s time to welcome Mister Ralf Rangnick to the wheel.

"Let’s get started!"

Rangnick's first game in charge of United as interim manager will be against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
