Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo released from Portugal international duty

Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo has been released from international duty with Portugal.

Ronaldo scored a late brace to inspire Portugal to complete a comeback against Ireland in his nation's first World Cup qualifier of the international break on Wednesday, but those goals had greater importance as the five-time Ballon d'Or winner created history.

That's because Ronaldo broke the all-time international scoring record - he's now scored an incredible 111 international goals.

However, Ronaldo received a yellow card in that match and that was his second of the qualification period, which means he'll now fulfil a mandatory one-game suspension, which will rule him out of Portugal's game against Azerbaijan.

Ronaldo has now been released from international duty and he could therefore return to Manchester earlier than anticipated.

There are quarantine rules to consider, though, which could delay Ronaldo making his return to Carrington.

The UK government's rules state that fully-vaccinated people entering from Portugal do not have to self-isolate, but if Ronaldo isn't double-jabbed then he'll need to quarantine at home for 10 days - which would rule him out of United's game versus Newcastle.

If Ronaldo is double-vaccinated, he could make his second United debut against Newcastle on Saturday, September 11.

United announced the signing Ronaldo on a two-year contract, with the option of an additional year on Tuesday and the forward has re-joined the club he spent six years with 12 years after leaving for Real Madrid - the fee is an initial €15million, rising to €23m.
