Andy Gray has hailed Cristiano Ronaldo as the ‘best player in the world’ after his record-breaking feat during Manchester United’s 3-2 win over Arsenal.
The Portuguese superstar scored twice to help United come from behind to seal an important three points, and in doing so became the first player in history to score 801 top-level goals.
Despite his prolific form since returning to Old Trafford during the summer, Ronaldo has been a somewhat polarising figure.
Some pundits have criticised his unwillingness to press and work hard when United are out of possession, citing their disappointing season thus far as proof that despite the goals his presence is detrimental to the team.
However, former Everton striker Gray praised the 36-year-old, placing him above his long-time rival Lionel Messi as the world’s best.
“It’s amazing, outstanding in every way," Gray told BeIN Sports when asked about Ronaldo’s 801st career goal.
“Whatever one you thought was the best player in the world, Messi or Ronaldo for me it was him because of where he has done it.
“Manchester United - England, Real Madrid - Spain, Juventus - Italy and Portugal of course. It’s astounding. ”
Ronaldo is the holder of many individual accolades including being the all-time top scorer in men’s international football, the Champions League and for Spanish giants Real Madrid.
Despite the question marks regarding his overall contribution to the team, new United interim boss Ralf Rangnick will surely look to utilise his goal scoring talents to make his stint at Old Trafford a successful one.
