Manchester United's Bruno Fernandes disagrees with controversial referee decision for Arsenal goal

Bruno Fernandes has admitted that he thinks Manchester United's game against Arsenal on Thursday should have been stopped before the visitor's opening goal.

United beat Arsenal 3-2 at Old Trafford thanks to goals from Fernandes and Cristiano Ronaldo - the latter scored a brace - but the visitors drew first blood and scored the game's opener when Emile Smith Rowe's tame effort from distance found the back of the net.

David de Gea had gone down when Fred stamped on his boot from a corner just moments before Smith Rowe received the ball.

Within the rules, the goal was perfectly legal but Fernandes felt referee Martin Atkinson had a moral obligation to halt proceedings.

"I don't know, honestly," Fernandes told Amazon when asked about the controversial decision.

"Usually when the goalkeeper goes down, I think we should stop the game.

"Mistakes happen. Players make mistakes. I don't know if the referee made one or not, but if is a mistake from the referee then that can happen and we have to carry on. At this moment, it's really hard for us, but football is like that."
