Manchester United's £44m transfer decision hands Chelsea major Kai Havertz boost

Chelsea have been given a free run at signing Kai Havertz this summer.

The Blues are keen on the 21-year-old midfielder, who has scored 15 goals and made eight assists for Bayer Leverkusen this season.

Yet Chelsea have previously faced competition from Manchester United for Havertz, with the midfielder gaining plenty of admirers for his Bundesliga displays.

The Daily Star claim that United have now turned their attention to Ajax star Donny van de Beek.

Van de Beek has shone for the Amsterdam side this season, netting 10 times and creating 11 more goals from midfield.

His price tag of £44m is significantly less than the £75m Havertz has been valued at.

This could well hand Chelsea a major boost in their hopes of signing Havertz, having already nabbed Timo Werner from Liverpool's grip.

Should the competition for Havertz's signature fade away, the Blues could well manage to sign the German star for a lower fee, too.

United's hopes of signing van de Beek have been boosted by Ajax boss Ronald De Boer amid interest from Real Madrid.

He said: “If you hear about these clubs, then your heart will start pounding harder.

“Maybe this train will never pass by anymore for him.

“If Real Madrid again decide not to report themselves at Donny, then I can understand it if he decides to go to Man United instead."

Havertz has missed Leverkusen's last two matches due to a muscle injury picked up against Freiburg two weeks ago.

He is a doubt or Sunday's game against Schalke, but manager Peter Bosz has confirmed the versatile attacking midfielder has returned to light training.

"We only did light training this morning," Bosz said on Friday. "We have to be careful and I can't say anything definite about Kai."
