Manchester United's 2019/20 season predicted without Romelu Lukaku

Manchester United are set to be quiet on deadline day in terms of incomings, but there will almost certainly be a departure, with Romelu Lukaku expected to join Inter Milan.

The Belgian joined United from Everton in July 2017 and has scored 42 goals in 96 games for the Red Devils, as well as providing 13 assists in his time at the club.

He started the 2018/19 season as a regular starter under former United manager Jose Mourinho, but fell out of favour towards the end of the season under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and now looks set to leave in a £73 million deal.

So, with Lukaku set to depart, who will step up for United next season in terms of goal scoring?

And, how will Lukaku perform for Inter Milan?

We used Football Manager 2019 to have a bit of fun and try and predict United without Lukaku next season.

Romelu Lukaku - Inter Milan

To set up the simulation, we inputted a future transfer of £73 million in August 2019, which saw Lukaku move to Inter Milan.

Using a fan made editor file, we also updated all the latest transfers, manager changes, promotions and relegations, to make it as realistic as possible, including the likes of Harry Maguire, Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

We also stopped United signing anyone else in-game, to see who would step up in Lukaku's absence.

So how much difference would the Belgian's departure make to United's performance in the 2019/20 season?

Here's what happened....

United's players certainly stepped up after the Belgian's departure, they didn't exactly struggle for goals without him.

Without Lukaku, Rashford made the number 9 spot his own, with Sanchez and Mata the best performing wide players for United.

Lingard, Pogba and Matic formed a good midfield partnership, whilst Maguire and Wan-Bissaka settled in well.

But, how did this team get on in 2019/20?

United had a good season domestically without Lukaku, finishing in fourth position and securing Champions League football, although they did finish 17 points behind third place Tottenham.

Despite the gap to the top three, this simulation predicts a good season.

So, how did Lukaku get on in Italy?

In summary, not good.

The Belgian struggled for game time at Inter, making just 20 appearances, of which only 14 were starts, scoring a paltry five goals in all competitions for the Serie A side.

(Football Manager 2019)

According to Football Manager 2019, the impending Lukaku deal is great business for United, as the squad will step up in his absence and they will be proved right by selling him, due to his subsequent poor form in Italy.

Plus, the simulation predicts a return to Champions League football by finishing in the top four.

Let's see what happens in 2019/20, but FM certainly predicts a positive season for United.
