Manchester United rumoured transfer plans may need reassessing if Ralf Rangnick is to succeed

Ralf Rangnick has inherited what can only be described as a mixed bag of a squad from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

His Manchester United side contains a number of superstar players, though there are some obvious weak spots that need addressing.

As the January transfer window approaches, talk of incomings is as rife as ever, though it seems there may also be some departures from Old Trafford.

Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Dean Henderson and Anthony Martial have all been linked with moves away, but with a testing season ahead of him, Rangnick will need to make some difficult decisions.

Barcelona are understood to be monitoring Cavani with a view to a January deal, while Newcastle United are reported to be keen to thrash out a deal for Lingard.

Both players' contracts expire in the summer and so it would make sense for United to cut ties while they have the chance to secure a fee.

However, Rangnick's appointment at Old Trafford has seen a severe shift in system, with United now looking to adopt a more intense style of play, something both Cavani and Lingard would be able to adapt to seamlessly.

Rangnick's wealth of attacking options means neither is likely to be promised a regular place in the starting XI, but they would have important roles to play if they did remain at the club.

Henderson's situation is slightly more complex. It's difficult and perhaps unwise to rotate goalkeepers, and David de Gea's fine form means Henderson is a long way off regular football.

If it was up to Rangnick, I imagine he'd keep hold of Henderson beyond January, but Henderson's desire to play first-team football means his departure may be necessary.

Last but not least is Martial. The Frenchman's agent recently revealed his client wants to move on, though a lack of potential suitors is proving a major stumbling block in his plans.

If United were to part ways with the aforementioned players, Rangnick would be down to the bare bones.

This could benefit some of the academy players looking for their chance to shine, but as we reach the business end of the campaign, experience could prove invaluable.

Rangnick needs to ensure he has a healthy squad without keeping players at the club against their will, and January could prove to be a key month in his tenure.
