Manchester United: Ruben Amorim eyes new transfer target amid Elliot Anderson worry

Manchester United could turn their attentions to Wolves’ Joao Gomes should they not be able to land Elliot Anderson.

Ruben Amorim’s side are reportedly in the market for a new midfielder, with the Portuguese keen to reinforce his engine room.

Academy graduate Kobbie Mainoo is out of favour with the head coach, while Manuel Ugarte’s minutes have also been limited, with Casemiro and Bruno Fernandes often the first-choice pairing in Amorim’s 3-4-2-1.

Now, The Daily Mail claim that United want to sign Gomes from the Premier League’s bottom side Wolves, who is also attracting interest from other Premier League outfits.

The report details that Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City are all in the running fir the Brazilian’s signature.

United have previously been linked with Nottingham Forest’s Elliot Anderson, who has cemented himself as a regular first-teamer in the England set-up under Thomas Tuchel.

The Red Devils spent big in the summer and are reportedly wanting to sign a midfielder ahead of next year’s World Cup in order to get a good and non-inflated fee.

With Anderson almost a shoo-in for the tournament in Canada, Mexico, and the United States in 2026, it could give the Forest man the platform to perform and thus give United’s Premier League rivals a reason to raise their asking price.

That could also be said of Gomes, who has 10 caps for his country, but he was omitted from Carlo Ancelotti’s most recent squad for this international break.

United’s fringe players should be given a chance to prove their worth when Amorim loses some key names to the Africa Cup of Nations, like Bryan Mbeumo, Amad Diallo and Noussair Mazraoui.
