Manchester United release statement on Sir Bobby Charlton after dementia diagnosis

Manchester United have pledged their support to Sir Bobby Charlton and his family after it was announced he has been diagnosed with dementia.

Charlton, 83, is one of United's greatest players, having won three English league titles and the 1963 FA Cup, as well as scoring twice in the 1968 European Cup final triumph 10 years after he survived the Munich air disaster.

United said in a statement: "Everyone at Manchester United is saddened that this terrible disease has afflicted Sir Bobby Charlton and we continue to offer our love and support to Sir Bobby and his family."

Charlton's brother, Jack, died earlier this year after being diagnosed with dementia and fellow England '66 teammate Nobby Stiles also suffered from the disease.

Charlton, a United director since 1984 and a club ambassador, has not attended a match at Old Trafford since the FA Cup third round replay win over Wolves in January.

A World Cup winner with England in 1966, Charlton also received the Ballon d'Or in the same year and was, until September 2015, England's all-time leading goalscorer. Charlton held the United goalscoring record until Wayne Rooney overtook him in January 2017.

Charlton debuted for United against Charlton Athletic in 1956 and scored 249 goals in 758 games before he left the club in 1973 to become player/manager of Preston.

United renamed the south stand at Old Trafford the Sir Bobby Charlton Stand in April 2016 and he is part of the Trinity statue outside the stadium, flanked by fellow Ballon d'Or recipients George Best and Denis Law.
