Manchester United release statement on Harry Maguire after conviction in Greek court

Manchester United have released a statement confirming their captain Harry Maguire intends to appeal his conviction on charges of assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery in Greece.

Maguire was handed a prison sentence of 21 months and 10 days after the guilty verdict, but the sentence is to be suspended as it is a first offence and the charges were considered misdemeanours under the Greek justice system.

But the 27-year-old is continuing to protest his innocence, despite being found guilty of assault, resisting arrest and attempted bribery at a trial in Greece on Tuesday.

In a statement, Maguire insisted it was himself, his family and friends who were the real victims after the incident on the holiday island of Mykonos last Thursday.

United also released their own statement in which they confirmed Maguire was continuing to "strongly assert his innocence", with his legal team wanting "a full and fair hearing at a later date" after being unhappy with some details of the prosecution's approach in Greece.

The United statement said: "Manchester United notes the verdict of the Greek court today. Harry Maguire pleaded not guilty to all of the misdemeanour charges made against him and he continues to strongly assert his innocence.

"It should be noted that the prosecution confirmed the charges and provided their evidence late on the day before the trial, giving the defence team minimal time to digest them and prepare. A request for the case to be adjourned was subsequently denied.

"On this basis, along with the substantial body of evidence refuting the charges, Harry Maguire’s legal team will now appeal the verdict, to allow a full and fair hearing at a later date."
