Manchester United release eight players and confirm contract talks with two senior players

Manchester United are in talks with Lee Grant and Juan Mata over new contracts, but Sergio Romero is one of eight players who have been released.

Grant and Mata are due to leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of this month but both have been offered fresh terms to extend their stay at Old Trafford.

Mata scored in the final day Premier League win at Wolves but the 33-year-old started only 10 games in all competitions this season. Speaking before the final day of the season Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said a decision on the Spaniard's future was down to Mata and whether he wanted to leave in search of more first-team opportunities.

Grant, 38, was named on the bench for 21 games this season, but that was often when United could name a larger bench and included two goalkeepers amongst the replacements. The goalkeeper has only ever made one start for the club and has been third-choice this season behind David de Gea and Dean Henderson.

United have also offered a new contract to 22-year-old goalkeeper Paul Woolston. Signed from Newcastle United in 2018, he made nine appearances for the Under-23s this season.

One goalkeeper who is leaving is Sergio Romero, with the Argentine international a peripheral figure at Old Trafford last season. He was disappointed to be dropped for all three semi-finals last season and didn't make a single matchday squad this term.

Another goalkeeper to leave the club is Joel Pereira, with the 24-year-old released having spent time on loan at Huddersfield this season, where he made only two Championship appearances.

Six members of academy squads have also been released, with Jacob Carney, Mark Helm, Iestyn Hughes, Arnau Puigmal, Max Taylor and Aliou Traore told their time at the club has come to an end.
