Manchester United react to Man City Uefa appeal win

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer voiced his support for Financial Fair Play after Manchester City won their appeal against a two-year ban from European football.

City were initially hit with a €30million fine and prevented from playing in the Champions League or Europa League by Uefa, but the Court of Arbitration for Sport cleared City of committing 'serious breaches' of FFP regulations between 2012 and 2016.

Liverpool coach Jurgen Klopp and his Tottenham counterpart Jose Mourinho were scathing in their reactions to the outcome, with Mourinho describing it as 'disgraceful' and Klopp opined, 'I don't think it was a good day for football'.

City coach Pep Guardiola aimed a dig at United by saying 'for elite clubs, like Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal, it is uncomfortable us being here'.  United were among eight Premier League clubs who had written to CAS in May in an attempt to prevent City from playing in the Champions League while their appeal process was ongoing.

"I think other people can debate that and they want to debate that," Solskjaer said. "I don't think that's my job. My job is to make sure we focus on the next game and do the right things.

"With Financial Fair Play, it was brought in to keep football clubs financially sustainable and I think that's important. They give us rules there, too, that's what we're focusing on.

"And let other people discuss the rights and wrongs and what's happened."

Had CAS upheld City's ban or halved it to one year, the fifth place United currently occupy would have secured Champions League qualification.

"For all these clubs - Arsenal, Chelsea, Leicester, Wolves, Man United, Tottenham, Liverpool, Burnley - I understand they want the five positions for the Champions League," Guardiola said on Tuesday.

"They must be happy because we didn't break the rules. We played the same rules as all the clubs in the Premier League and Uefa. Don’t go whispering between eight clubs. Go and do it on the pitch.

"All of them [have] opinions but I tell Jos and Jürgen that today was a good day for football. A very good day. It was clear what happened. And that’s nice. Jose and other managers should know, we were damaged, we should be apologised to.

"I have a long history, I show a lot of respect, not just for the manager for Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool, but for all the managers I face. I don’t expect they are going to defend my club but I want to defend my club in the good and especially the bad moments."
