Manchester United provide Phil Jones update ahead of new season

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has admitted he's been impressed by Manchester United's Phil Jones in training.

Jones, 29, last played for United in the FA Cup against Tranmere in January 2020 and he's since struggled with injury.

Although Jones has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford, the English centre-back was pictured at United's pre-season camp at St Andrews in Scotland ahead of the new season - It's worth noting Jones' contract at United expires in the summer of 2023.

While Solskjaer has Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Eric Bailly and imminent signing Raphael Varane at his disposal in central defence, the Norwegian has explained that Jones' resilience has caught his eye in training, which could be a hint on the defender's future.

“I’m impressed by his resilience in training,” Solskjaer told United's in-house media.

"We have to manage the workload early on. I’ve been part of that myself after being out for the best part of a year and a little bit more than that. He’s been so determined and worked so hard.

“Now is not the time to rush things, now is the time to really do the last bit perfectly. As I said, Reserve games, Under-23s, maybe behind closed doors. He’s already had in-house games against the 23s, so it’s looking good.”
