Manchester United protests see security increased ahead of Liverpool game

Manchester United have increased security at Old Trafford for their rearranged game with Liverpool, amid calls for another fan protest, according to a report.

Liverpool travel to Old Trafford on Thursday night (8:15pm kick-off) for a Premier League fixture originally scheduled to take place 11 days earlier.

However, the heavyweight clash between English football’s two most-successful club sides was postponed due to safety concerns after an organised group of United fans broke into the stadium and invaded the pitch in protest against the club’s owners, the US-based Glazer family.

Sky Sports claim an anonymous fans' group is now encouraging United supporters to congregate outside the stadium again.

In preparation for Jurgen Klopp’s side’s visit, the report says a series of additional measures have been implemented.

The article states that the supporters' group has talked about 10,000 fans possibly attending on Thursday, but recent protests saw around 2,000 fans show up at the ground on May 2 and around 500 the weekend before.

More substantial barricades and barriers are now in place around the entire Old Trafford footprint, including all around the forecourt and the Trinity Statue while a lot of the barriers are also multi-layered.

Increased security involves a far larger number of police from forces around the country, plus dogs and horses.

Measures were brought in for United's home game against Leicester City on Tuesday but that fixture was considered something of a dress rehearsal as intelligence has always been that the Liverpool match would be the focal point.

Police and security are already in place at the ground with reinforcements spread across the entire site.
