Manchester United post losses of more than £20m in first three months of 2021 as Covid-19 restrictions continue

Manchester United posted losses of more than £20m in the first three months of 2021 as Covid-19 restrictions keeping fans away from Old Trafford continued to have an impact.

The Premier League club have reported operating losses of £21.6m for the period to 31 March, the third quarter of their current financial year, compared to losses of £3.3m during the same period in 2020.

United's total revenue also dipped from £123.7m to £118.3m, with commercial revenue going from £68.6m to £58.1m and match day earnings slumping from £29.1m to £1.6m.

However, the club's broadcasting revenue jumped from £26m to £58.6m.

Over the three quarters to the end of March, United's total revenue is down 6.4% at £400.1m while their operating losses stand at £200,000.

Executive vice chairman Ed Woodward: "The absence of fans over the past year has proved that they are the lifeblood of the game.

"Following the successful return of limited numbers at the end of last season, and continued trials of increased crowds at sports events this summer, we remain optimistic about the prospect of fans returning to Old Trafford in larger numbers going forwards.

"With the foundations for long-term success in place, including significant initiatives to strengthen engagement with our supporters, we look forward to the upcoming season."

United also confirmed that their sponsorship revenue was £35.8m in the period, a decrease of £8.9m due to Covid-19 related variations and a one-time sponsorship credit in the prior quarter.

Their retail, merchandising, apparel and product licensing revenue was £22.3m, a decrease of £1.6m, primarily due to the continued closure of the Old Trafford-based Megastore.

The club's net debt as of 31 March 2021 was £443.5m, compared with £429.1m as of 31 March 2020.
