Manchester United player told to secure transfer after new Ole Gunnar Solskjaer snub

Gary Neville says it is time for Donny van de Beek to leave Manchester United and restart his career elsewhere.

The Netherlands midfielder, 24, was a £35million signing from Ajax in September 2020 and put pen to paper on a five-year contract at Old Trafford.

But he is yet to start a Premier League match this season, remaining an unused substitute in Saturday’s 4-2 defeat against Leicester City despite United's midfield struggles at the King Power Stadium.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has started with seven different midfield combinations so far this term but van de Beek has spent a total of just 141 minutes on the pitch in all competitions and Neville believes the time has come for a move to a new club.

“Why’s Donny van de Beek not being given a chance?” said the former United defender.

“There’s something about that. He’s not been given a chance for 18 months so you’ve got to come to the conclusion that Ole didn’t sign him or he doesn’t fancy him.

“Neither is good for Donny van de Beek so I think he needs to go and play football somewhere.”

Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic started in midfield at Leicester, while Solskjaer has preferred the combination of Scott McTominay and Fred in recent weeks.

Van de Beek has already been linked with Serie A side Juventus ahead of the January transfer window but there are increasing calls for the Dutchman to be given a chance in the Premier League given United’s unconvincing start to the campaign.

The defeat to Leicester extended United’s winless run to three matches while Liverpool, Tottenham and Manchester City are the next three opponents in the league.
