Manchester United player told he would 'walk in' to the Manchester City starting XI

Chris Sutton has rubbished question marks over Bruno Fernandes' contribution in big matches by insisting he's the only player that would get into Manchester City's XI.

The Portuguese playmaker has struggled to impose himself against Manchester United 's biggest rivals, compared to his contributions against the 'smaller' clubs in the division.

Fernandes' only goal against the 'big six' came during United's 6-1 home defeat to Tottenham but Sutton has urged Fernandes' teammates to step up and offer more of a contribution.

“Apparently Bruno Fernandes doesn't turn up against the Big Six,” Sutton wrote in his column for Mail Sport.

“Seven games, one goal, no assists. But Manchester United's masterful midfielder can't do it all on his own.

“Fernandes has had an Eric Cantona-esque impact on the club and is the only United player who would walk into this City team.

“That is why he is scrutinised more than anyone else but he needs help.

“It cannot be that if Fernandes doesn't turn up, United don't turn up.

“He has scored once in those seven games — a penalty in the 6-1 defeat by Spurs — but that's one more than his team-mates. Fernandes could do with stepping up, but so could the rest!”

“They are so strong in all departments,” Pep Guardiola said when asked about the threat of United.

“Defensively, in midfield they have a quality playmaker in Bruno Fernandes and the players up front, so much pace.

"They have experience in [Edinson] Cavani, a player I admire. How he lives his career.

“It’s Manchester United. All the time, United are top class. It’s a privilege for us to have been in front of them for the last seasons.

“My target is to do what we have done lately and be ourselves.”
