Manchester United player Scott McTominay responds to Sir Alex Ferguson praise

Scott McTominay said it was a 'real honour' to have been singled out for praise by Sir Alex Ferguson.

On the eve of an eagerly-awaited Euro 2020 clash between Scotland and England, the Manchester United man is a certain starter for the visitors at Wembley.

Having fallen to defeat in their Group D opener against Czech Republic, McTominay and Scotland face a real fight to make it through to the knock-out stages this summer.

Speaking about McTominay earlier in the season, legendary United manager Ferguson said: "I look at the team and I look at the midfield players they've got and I think they're as good as anyone. They've got some top midfielders.

"Players that are playing in England - Tierney has been absolutely fantastic at Arsenal, Robertson the last two years at Liverpool has been unbelievable.

"Scott McTominay is now emerging as one of United's big players. When you watch United pick their team for a big game, McTominay's name is in it. He's a good character, a great trainer."

Sir Alex added: "I know a little bit about the boy and I think that's the background.

"McTominay is of a similar type to Darren [Fletcher] - long, lanky, good winner of the ball and a good turn of pace going forward, a great attitude to the game. All these attitudes that Darren Fletcher had, he's got them.

"Even if you go back to my time with Darren, I very seldom left him out of big games. McTominay is going forward on those guidelines that Darren pursued for a long time at United."

On receiving praise from Ferguson, McTominay said: "My dad was telling me. It's obviously such a huge honour to be spoken about by someone like Sir Alex, never mind the nice things he was saying about us and Scotland.

"For me, it's a chance to keep pushing and chance to not stop pushing forwards, hopefully making everyone proud of me."
