Manchester United player ratings: Alejandro Garnacho and Wout Weghorst good

David de Gea

Big save from Antonio but flirted with disaster by kicking the ball and not picking it up. Made another fine stop at 0-1. 6

Diogo Dalot

Missed a good chance with the goal gaping after Garnacho’s shot was parried. One of the players guilty of switching off when Said Benrahma scored. 5

Victor Lindelof

Did not look comfortable on the left side of defence and made way for Lisandro Martinez shortly after West Ham went 1-0 up. 5

Harry Maguire

Caught out for Antonio’s one-on-one and booked for a clumsy foul. Fortunate not to make way for Martinez but better in second half. 6

Tyrell Malacia

The most fluid of the back four but yet to have an impact in the final third. Did not lack for effort but did lack quality. 6

Scott McTominay

Made a decent start but then regressed and got booked. Played some familiarly poor passes and was hooked at half-time. 4

Marcel Sabitzer

Drew a good save from Areola early on did not strike up a balance with McTominay with them both starting. 6

Antony

No signficant piece of play other than at the start in the move that led to Sabitzer’s shot. Made way for Marcus Rashford before the hour. 5

Bruno Fernandes

Had no killer impact in the first half but created two goals in the second and one of them stood. Played like a man possessed in the last 20 minutes. 7

Alejandro Garnacho

Forced a save from Areola early on and persevered despite being roughed up a few times. Scored magnificently to win the tie. 8

Wout Weghorst

Some decent link up play but not come close to having a goalscoring chance. A valuable option from deep and his shot led to Alejandro Garnacho's winner. 7

Subs

Casemiro

Played probing passes and thought he had equalised but he had clearly strayed offside. Had another good headed chance. 7

Marcus Rashford

His fresh legs provided a different threat for West Ham. 6

Lisandro Martinez

Too aggressive against Antonio, who dominated their physical duel. 5

Fred

A late arrival who energised the team and scored. 7

Raphael Varane

Helped United hold on. 6

Manager

Made too many changes and knew it when he replaced McTominay with Casemiro at the interval. Martinez and Rashford were logical entrants and the decision not to take off Antony rather than Garnacho paid off. 7
