Man United player ratings vs Kristiansund: Juan Mata and Marcus Rashford good

David de Gea

Wore the captain's armband - and a very relaxed expression on his face - throughout the night. He wasn't tested. 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Showed the odd delightfully light touch to manoeuvre himself out of danger and marshaled well in defence. 7

Phil Jones

Came close with a bicycle kick - yes, you read that correctly - and again with a header. Put himself about at both ends of the pitch and, should United fail to sign Harry Maguire, he'll be in contention to start against Chelsea.  7

Victor Lindelof

You hardly noticed him, which told you that the Swede was untroubled and in complete control. 7

Luke Shaw

Marauded forward from left-back, with most of his work coming in the opponents' half, as United dominated. 7

Scott McTominay

Provided thrust and drive through the middle and in the space of two minutes he blasted two shots just wide. Relished the freedom of a slightly more attacking role.  8

Nemanja Matic

Ponderous and overly wasteful in possession. Will surely miss out to McTominay if Solskjaer sticks with his 4-2-3-1 system. 5

Daniel James

Always an outlet on the right, but his crossing was a little wayward and we didn't see much of his electric pace. 5

Jesse Lingard

Curled an effort inches wide and looked to receive the ball in tight spaces, playing in the pocket behind frontman Martial. Carried the ball well, but too often crowded out by Kristiansund. 6

Marcus Rashford

Displayed energy and skill in abundance as he switched to the left to accommodate Martial through the middle - though they later swapped roles. Stung the goalkeeper's palms with a fizzing free-kick. 7

Anthony Martial

One of his quieter days. United need greater consistency from him this season. 6

SUBS (all 60 minutes):

Sergio Romero - Like De Gea had been, a spectactor. 6

Diogo Dalot - Energetic. 6

Axel Tuanzebe - Brought pace to the back line. 6

Marcos Rojo -  Little impact. 6

Ashley Young - Took over the captaincy from De Gea and connected play well. 6

Fred -  Needs more minutes. 6

Paul Pogba - Was fit enough to play a part despite sitting out an earlier training session. 6

Andreas Pereira - Played on the right as Mata slotted into the No.10 role. Peripheral. 5

Juan Mata -  Brought down by the goalkeeper and tucked the penalty home himself to secure a last gasp win. 7.

Tahith Chong - Offered pace and direct running.  7

Mason Greenwood -  Came close to breaking the deadlock. 6
