Man Utd player ratings: Ashley Young poor Scott McTominay good vs Barcelona

David de Gea

Jutted his leg out to deny Philippe Coutinho in the first-half and used his feet again to deflect a Jordi Alba effort away in the second. 7

Ashley Young

His performance level has been low for some time and it plummeted against Barca. Could not get rid of the ball quickly enough. Could be dropped on Saturday. 1

Chris Smalling

Meant what he said about Lionel Messi by leaving the playmaker bloodied. Disciplined and refused to be overwhelmed by Barcelona's brilliance. 6

Victor Lindelof

Did not do much wrong but, like Smalling, was nigh-on powerless to contend with the visiting attack. Must look forward to playing in a back four again. 7

Luke Shaw

The latest square peg in a round hole in a back three. Shaw scored an own goal and was booked inside 20 minutes. He did not end the first-half there. 3

Fred

Another commendable big-game performance, despite the odd error. Used the ball prudently and went about his job more calmly. 7

Scott McTominay

Did not appear out of place or fazed by the occasion. If he was a bit cuter he could have won a penalty when Gerard Pique made contact. Becoming a big-game player. 7

Paul Pogba

The system was not conducive to Pogba's preference and he was slow to find his way into the game. Gradually became slightly more influential but not enough. 4

Diogo Dalot

Needlessly played out of position on the left wing and it backfired. But he should have scored from Marcus Rashford's cross. 5

Marcus Rashford

Typically game but never quite had the measure of Pique or Clement Lenglet. Provided a superb cross that Dalot wasted. 5

Romelu Lukaku

Has excelled without scoring in recent weeks but this was a night of regression. Irritated some supporters with an apparent lack of movement. 3

Subs

Anthony Martial

Miscontrolled McTominay's through pass. 4

Jesse Lingard

Little impact. 4

Andreas Pereira

Industrious. 5
