Manchester United player ratings: Stroll for the second string in Europa League victory over LASK

Manchester United eased through without impressing on their return to the Europa League with a 2-1 win at home to LASK Linz.

The Red Devils were already 5-0 up from the first leg and now progress to the last eight to face FC Copenhagen, 7-1 on aggregate.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer played largely a second-string team and it showed in a performance lacking cohesion and attacking quality.

Jesse Lingard scored United’s equaliser, one minute after Philipp Wiesinger had curled in a fantastic opener 10 minutes into the second half, before Anthony Martial netted a late winner.

Here are the player ratings for the home side from Old Trafford.

Sergio Romero – 6. Nothing he could do about the goal. Safe hands on crosses, but he got lucky after misjudging a low shot which struck his leg and bounced out.

Timothy Fosu-Mensah – 5. Really lacking in composure on the ball and timing in the challenge.

Eric Bailly – 7. Read the game well. On the front foot to intercept and clear. Got Maguire out of the odd tight spot.

Harry Maguire – 6. Took the ball out of defence well at times, but also played a few poor passes. Should have done better with a couple of headers off corners.

Brandon Williams – 6. Was solid enough defensively. One really good low cross in the second half.

Scott McTominay – 5. No real control of the midfield. Picked up a yellow card for a poor tackle.

Fred – 7. Combative, hard-working, passed the ball neatly. A decent display, if not one to definitely win a place in games which matter.

Juan Mata – 7. Not always heavily involved, but when he got on the ball he showed the quality touch which much of the team lacked.

Jesse Lingard – 6. Scored on the counter-attack, which will do his confidence good. Was a bit of a passenger though and subbed after an hour or so.

Dan James – 5. Wasted a couple of good openings down the left, not picking the right pass or time to release the ball. Very one-dimensional in possession.

Odion Ighalo – 6. Starved of service most of the game and wasted his one chance in the second half.

Subs:

Paul Pogba (on 64’) – 6. Not much impact.

Andreas Pereira (on 64’) – 7. A few nice dribbles in the final third.

Tahith Chong (on 72’) – 6. Worked hard, neat touches.

Anthony Martial (on 84’) – 7. Came on. Scored. Went home.

Teden Mengi (on 84’) – 6. First-team debut for the teenager.
