Manchester United player ratings vs Burnley as Scott McTominay and Luke Shaw impress

David de Gea

Could have anticipated the direction of Aaron Lennon's shot better but had an otherwise quiet night as Burnley squandered their openings. 6

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

An important block at 0-0 and ended up in nosebleed territory of the left wing. Not an upgrade on Diogo Dalot. 5

Eric Bailly

Erred for Lennon's goal when he was dispossessed by the winger similarly to Raphael Varane at Newcastle and then got injured. Not the send-off he wanted ahead of the Africa Cup of Nations. 5

Harry Maguire

Won a fair amount of aerial duels but he was uncomfortable against Chris Wood and backed off when Lennon charged forward. 5

Luke Shaw

A resounding return. Proactive, attack-minded and almost scored. When Shaw is on it, he is United's best left-back. 7

Scott McTominay

Scored his first club goal since February with a fine finish to make it 1-0 and was denied a second when Wayne Hennessey tipped onto the crossbar. 8

Nemanja Matic

Had little impact in place of the dropped Fred. Should have been more cynical and halted Lennon's run. His presence benefited McTominay. 6

Jadon Sancho

Often sloppy with the ball and when he was direct he forced the second goal, albeit an own goal by Ben Mee. 6

Mason Greenwood

Alert on the ball but quiet in the first-half. Drew a save in the second on a more upbeat evening than in Newcastle. 6

Cristiano Ronaldo

Ended the first-half with an assist and a goal when his most memorable action was skying a one-on-one. Could have scored more. 6

Edinson Cavani

Dropped deep too often for United's specialist number nine and lacked an outstanding chance to build on his equaliser at Newcastle. 6

Subs

Raphael Varane

Replaced the injured Bailly and was steady. 6

Diogo Dalot

Late cameo on the right wing. 6

Fred

Came on in added time. N/A

Manager

Made proactive changes to the front four and freshened up at full-back, while McTominay benefited from playing next to a sitting midfielder. 6
