Manchester United player ratings: Paul Pogba good but Donny van de Beek bad vs West Ham

Dean Henderson

Made an early save but was surrounded by incompetence in the feckless first-half. His goal led a charmed life at times. Good save from Aaron Cresswell. 7

Aaron Wan-Bissaka

So vulnerable so often and a recovery tackle on Jarrod Bowen could not detract from his poor performance at both ends. 5

Victor Lindelof

Uncomfortable against a physical figurehead yet again but had it easier in the second-half as United took control. 5

Harry Maguire

Clumsily allowed Sebastian Haller in at 1-0 but was reprieved. Much more himself in the second-half with Bruno Fernandes on the pitch. 6

Alex Telles

Jarrod Bowen had Telles on toast and he was cowed by the crowd. Assisted Mason Greenwood but Luke Shaw's imminent return might yet be well-timed. 5

Scott McTominay

Tried to arrest United's lethargy with his aggression but was all steel and no silk. More at ease after the interval. 5

Donny van de Beek

Tried to give United a measure of control but no one was on his wavelength. Harshly substituted at half-time. 4

Paul Pogba

Started tidily but when West Ham increased the tempo Pogba went missing and Declan Rice bossed him in the first-half. He recovered to score classily in the second. 7

Anthony Martial

Weak on the ball and West Ham preyed on his flakiness. Should not have started and came off 16 minutes too late. Still without a league goal this season. 3

Mason Greenwood

So detached from the rest of the attackers in the first-half but rightly kept on beyond the pause and finished fabulously to make it 2-1. 7

Edinson Cavani

Lacked service in a front six that was disjointed and much-changed from Wednesday night. Hooked at half-time. 4

Subs

Bruno Fernandes

Made a huge difference, bringing United to life and assisting Pogba. 8

Marcus Rashford

Improved United immediately, hit the post and then scored impudently. 8

Juan Mata

Magnificent pass for Rashford to score. 7

Manager

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer

Rested too many key players and it predictably disrupted United's rhythm and had to make two half-time changes. Not vindicated in sticking by Martial but got the three in-game changes right. 6
